The Search for Life Beyond Earth: Are We Alone

Life beyond Earth:

It is very interesting question that life beyond Earth exist or not. Is there possibility that different organisms can live in another world. Scientist named "Alien" to these extraterrestrial organisms.

What is alien?

The word alien derives from Latin word 'alienus' which means "foreign"  or "belonging to another". In past this term was used for person that belongs to another town or country. With the passage of time through internet world become global village and no one is unknown. Now every one is familiar to each other. This term is now used for extraterrestrial life which is unfamiliar for us.

Why scientists believe in the existence of alien?

There are billions of galaxy and trillions of planets in our universe. So, there is high possibility Earth is not only planet evolve for life. Scientists discovered many planets which have all requirments, suitable for life. Many stars have planet orbiting them just like our solar system. This large number of stars and planets make the posibility of extraterrestrial organisms.

The Ecology of Alien World:

Ecology is the study of behavior of organisms and how they interact with environment. Astroecology is the study of origin, evolution, environment and organims needs which is necessary for life in all over universe.
Life cannot exist in any environment, it requires an ecosystem. Alien doesn't mean person with strange faces like in our imagination and movies. It means life in another world. It can be a small microbe like bacteria, or can be very big like a whale.

Conditions necessary for life:

Even in extreme condition environment should have basic factors for life on Earth. These factors are:
  • Suitable temperature
  • Suitable pressure
  • Water
  • Air
  • Sunlight or another source of energy.

Temperature:

Suitable temperature is very essential for life. The range of suitable temperature is
approximately 0 °C-40 °C. It is different for different organism. For example some bacteria
can exist -5 °C.If temperature will increase  or decrease from its normal value it become
very difficult to live.

Suitable pressure:

Suitable atmospheric pressure is essential for survival. Because it maintains respiration, osmosis, and fluid stability in body.

Water:

Water is necessary factor for life. Our total body has 60% made up of water. Mostly metabolism take place in water. It protect organs from friction and abrasive damage. It is also main factor in photosynthesis (production of glucose). Many organisms live in water. Water also work as temperature stabilizer in our environment. It has great ability of absorbing heat which protects organisms from sudden thermal change.

Air:

Air is essential for all living organisms. Air is the mixture of gases. Which contain oxygen,
nitrogen and carbon dioxide, essential elements for life. For example oxygen for breathing, carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and nitrogen for protein synthesis.

Sunlight:

Sunlight is also essential for life. It is an important factor for photosynthesis. It is also a souce of production of vitamin D in human body. It also regulate climate, weather, and temperature. It is considered to be very first factor in food chain.
Scientists thinks that life on other planets may be different from life on Earth.

The habitable zone:

Places in universe where temperature is not too hot, nor too cold is called habitable zone. It is also called "Goldilocks worlds". These zones are at specific distances from stars. Earth and Mars are in habitable zone of our solar system.
Some example are Proxima Centauri b and Kepler-452b.

Exoplanets:

The planets outside our solar system are known as exoplanets. More than thousands exoplanets have been discovered including goldilocks worlds. There is massive diversity of exoplanets in our universe. They can be gaseous or rocky. Scientists focus on exoplanets to search habitable zone. Astronomers search these planets through indirect methods rather than directly.

Possible locations in universe where life can exist:

Some possible locations are explained below:

Mars:

The dusty desert of Mars
Mars is fourth planet of our solar system. Mars is cold and dusty planet with average temperature of -65
°C. It has two tiny moon Phobos and Deimos.

Is there life on Mars:

There is no true and conclusive evidence of life on Mars but some biosignatures are discovered. It is a proof that may at some time life were existed on Mars. Ancient microbial life can exist four billion years ago.

Enceladus:

The outer surface of Enceladus
Enceladus is the moon of Saturn. It is larest sixth moon of Saturn which is prime target of finding extraterrestrial life. Scientists discovered a large global ocean under icy surface and above rocky core. There are hydrothermal vents with essential building blocks of life like organic compound. Water-rich greysers erupt from its icy surface. It is surprising that it stay warms despite of its greater distance from sun.

Asteroids Ryugu and Bennu:

Asteroids Ryugu and Bennu are Near-Earth objects(NEO). They orbit sun inside the Mars's orbit. They are being heavily studied by scientists for detection of life. Five basics nucleobases(adenine, guanine, cytocine, thymine and uracil) have been discovered on these asteroids.

Extremophiles on Earth:

Those organisms who can survive in very extreme conditions are called extrmophiles. Like tardigrades, archaebacteria, brine shrimp, and Picrophilus torridus. There are different types of extremophiles like acid lover and heat lover. They can survive in high temperature and high ph.
These real world examples suggest that life can exist in very harsh conditions on other planets.

Conclusion:

Discovery of hydrothermal vents, organic molecules, and nucleobases have beeen discovered in space. But there is no direct evidence of life or intelligent civiliztion in universe. When we see extemophiles we imadined that life is resilient. New discoveries and human intelligence thinking strengthen the possibility of alien. Are we alone in universe? It is still big mystery in science that hve to be solved.
