The Hidden Environmental Cost of Conflicts and War
Introduction: War and Environment
War is a devastating destroyer. It has bad effects on our ecosystem and climate. Approximately 5% greenhouse gas emissions are directly linked to the military. Its actual percentage is likely much higher. Military activities, atomic bombs, and fires cause massive destruction, not only to one country but also to the global environment.
Greenhouse gas emission:
The rapid rise in greenhouse gases is one of the most prominent factors that affect the climate.
Causes:
- Militaries consume massive amounts of hydrocarbons (petroleum) to power tanks, naval ships, and fighter jets, releasing tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
- Massive military bases require immense amounts of electricity for powering, heating, and cooling infrastructure.
- Items shipping and supplies also consume fossil fuels and a lot of energy.
Effects:
- These activities release vast amounts of greenhouse gases (like carbon dioxide and methane). As these gases trap heat in the atmosphere, they trigger global temperature rises, leading to extreme weather anomalies and accelerated climate change.
Destruction of forest(Deforestation):
Wars also destroy forests directly.
- Bombings cause huge fires that burns forests. Heavy missiles can also destroy forests.
- They also cut down trees for varous purposes like building base camps, training area, or selling timber.
- They also destroy trees to clear a path for direct approaches to the enemy.
Pollution:
- Heavy metals and chemicals are dissolved into water and soil. These metals threaten aquatic life and damage the quality of soil.
- When jets crash in water, gunpowder and fossilfuels are dissolved in water. And it effects badly.
- Sometimes, during transportation, oil tanks leak into water, which is a common source of water pollution.
- Bombing releases carbon black that speeds up global warming.
Reconstruction increase emision:
After the war we need to reconstruct houses, offices, and other religious building. Reconstruction needs immense amount of cement, machinery, and transportation. It also release carbon in atmosphere.
Refugees crisis:
War triggers miilion of people to leave their home. When they go to new place it cause overcrowd. It increase the demand of food and water directly effects natural resources.
Explosion cause fire:
When atomic bomb and misiles attacked or explode it cause huge fire. this fire is source of pollution and climate change.
- First of all fire cause smoke and soot(an organic black powder produce by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons)
- Many toxic and greenhouse gases like methane are produced.
- Due to half combustion of carbon black carbon monooxide produced which is one of the most dangerous gases.
Bad impact of climate change:
As explain above climate change is very dangerous for ecosystem, wildlife and all over the world.
Impact on ecosystem and wildlife:
- Unpredictable, heavy rainfall leads to severe flooding and loss of biodivesity.
- Oceans and river absorb heat from air. With the temperature rise water will be more hotter. Hot water effects marine life.
- Rising temperature also cause drought and wildfires in forests. As a result many animals loss their habitat.
- Melting ice rise sea level shrinking arctic land which is home to many organisms.
- Climate change shift weather. Shifting weather patterns alter migration and breeding seasons, throwing natural food chains out of balance.
- When ocean absorb more carbon dioxide from atmosphere water become acidic. It weakens the shell of oyster and crab.
- Warmer temperature cause heat stroke and immediate death of animals.
Impact on economy:
- Heavy rainfall destroy crops and buildings.
- Buisness may close due to environmental damage leads to unemployment.
- Shipping ports and transportation routes may be damaged by flood and land sliding.
- Climate change cause severe health problems. families spent their money on medical treatment.
- Tourism is an important source of income. Extreme weather destroy most of natural resorts.
Imact on health:
Climate change also effect human health. Such as heat stroke, respiratory issues(like asthema and lungs problems).
Positive impact of climate change:
While climate change may create some short-term advantages in the few parts of the world, including longer agricultural seasons and easier arctic transportation, its overall effect on the environment, economy and human well-being remains overwhemlingly harmful.
Conclusion:
War contributes to climate change by increasing greenhouse and toxic gases, polluting, and damaging biodiversity. However, it can weaken economies by reducing agriculture, destroying infrastructure, and raising costs. The connection between war and environmental damage is often overlooked and rarely reported. If the military is a separate country, it will be ranked first for damaging the environment.
